Contact Photography Festival, 2010

posted by: carty on April 26th, 2010

Hosted at the Baitshop gallery (West Queen West) and running May 7 to 29th, our exhibit and programming is a collaborative venture fusing traditional, contemporary and technological approaches to photography and other art forms. Featuring the work of veteran Toronto photographer Steve Carty, Applied Arts 2009 award winners Javier Lovera and Stefania Sgambelluri, along with photographers Jalani Morgan and Cory Vanderploeg – in collaboration with other best-in-class artists Skam, Jon Todd, Derooted’s Simon Rojas, Smakstudio’s Scott McIntyre and Kimmy Yun– the exhibit challenges Marshall McLuhan’s theory of Hot and Cold media. Spectators will be inspired and encouraged to engage with the art – through the combination of traditional and progressive interactive media, no two perspectives will be the same, and no piece will be complete without participation. The Baitshop was founded in 2007 as a collective, creative space. Its purpose: to house and facilitate the production and promotion of local art, athletes, and artisans. BlogTo calls it one of the Best New Art Galleries in Toronto. The two level, versatile space serves not only as a gallery, but also as a creative hub and meeting spot focused around artists, creatives and skateboarders. The 2000 sq. ft. space has original character (it used to be a worm farm), architectural interest, is steps from the Gladstone and Drake Hotels. Its alleyway-entrance is the perfect setting for a unique art exhibit. Notable shows include Contact 2008 “Tale of Three Cities” show of young photographers from New York, Rio De Janeiro and Toronto, and “Earning a Voice” show by Erin Hogue, resident photographer on the Skate 4 Cancer Tour, Sponsored by Element Skateboards and MTV. It has also played host to a number of movie premieres and parties since opening in 2007.
