Steve Carty Photographer – Contact 2011
“Moving Pictures”, an installation of Short Motion Portraits.
The Hermann & Audrey Exhibit features: Steve Carty, Che Kothari, Javier Lovera, Scott McIntyre, Jalani Morgan, Simon Rojas, Shingo Shimizu, Cory Vanderploeg. These six original collaborations feature some of Toronto’s most notable photographers and the city’s truest talent in arts and media. The exhibition explores beauty, time, space, person, place, and the power that technology has to manipulate understanding. As the debut showcase for the galleries of 99 Sudbury, Hermann & Audrey will once again introduce a beautifully re-imagined space to the cultural core of the city that is Toronto’s Queen West.
Steve Carty, “Moving Pictures”. An installation of short motion portraits.
Gestalt theorists, are intrigued by the way our mind perceives wholes out of incomplete elements. Raw and open to interpretation, I’ve created 12 Video Portraits that resemble “Living Photographs”. With this particular body of work, I chose faces that society classifies as “perfect”. Using the Theory of Similarity, I photographed them all using natural light, similar framing and either a black or white background. Delivering them to the viewer in a raw, intimate and engaging way. The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together. These “Moving Pictures” grab the observer with mesmerizing eye contact nearly impossible to break, their smiles creating smiles, their stillness creating tension. Each video portrait reveals the subjects own personality, with the entire installation completing itself as a whole.
Showing at 99 Sudbury, during the Contact Photography Festival.
